Spend any time on crypto-focused social media and you’re sure to come across dozens of bitcoin maximalists with laser-eyed profile pics, from MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor to Bianco Research analyst Jim Bianco.
The trend caught on last year after Twitter user CHAIRFORCE_BTC posted the first #LaserRayUntil100K hashtag on February 16th, encouraging bitcoin believers to add laser eyes to their avatars until bitcoin’s price crossed the $100,000 mark.
It captured the mood of the time, as bitcoin’s price crossed $50,000 and then $60,000. But as the one-year anniversary of the meme approaches, bitcoin is currently languishing below $45,000.
It appears that bitcoin’s meme-fueled backers might have to keep those laser eyes on their avatars for a while yet.
