As the chart shows, shares in Bucket Studio and Showbox have surged over the past week, with trading volume more than 90 times greater than average on Friday.
The stocks have soared despite having little direct relationship to the show, which is produced by a private company called Siren Pictures. Bucket Studio owns a stake in the agency representing Squid Game star Lee Jung-Jae and Showbox has worked with Siren Pictures in the past.
Squid Game’s nine-episode-long first season was released on September 17th. A little like “The Hunger Games” or “Battle Royale”, it tells the story of a group of people who risk their lives in a mysterious survival game, hoping to win a massive cash prize.
Korean stocks overall have still struggled somewhat this year. The benchmark Kospi Index is only up 7.8%, compared to a 13% gain in the MSCI All-Country World Index.
