Finimize Live: The Path To Carbon Neutrality

Finimize Live: The Path To Carbon Neutrality

about 3 years ago1 min

Hi, it’s Community Host Nikki Hawkes here 👋 On February 23rd, 2021, I was joined by Joshua Hasdell from KPMG to discuss how to identify carbon neutral businesses to invest in.

Several companies have set themselves net-zero carbon emissions targets, but then focus solely on energy transition – which only account for 55% of total carbon emissions. This event highlighted how to look out for companies that are going beyond this.

Three key conversation takeaways:

  • Minimum waste business models can be integrated into a company's business strategy, and need to be taken up by everyone in order to achieve a circular economy. Good practices include the use of materiality assessments which have engaged with lots of stakeholders within and outside the business.
  • Bad practices by companies on their quest to achieve a carbon net-zero status would be stating corporate social responsibility (CSR) ambitions with unfocused goals.
  • Not everyone is perfect and achieving these transitions will be difficult - If a company hasn't reached their targets, being transparent and explaining why will help them win back investor trust.

"Authenticity is key – ESG ratings help us hold organisations accountable so that they don't say one thing and do another."

Joshua Hasdell from KPMG
