This week sees the start of the fourth-quarter earnings season, with US banking giants JPMorgan and Citigroup reporting on Friday. Investors will also keep a close eye on Wednesday’s US inflation data for signs of how quickly the Federal Reserve (the Fed) may have to raise interest rates in 2022. Here are the top events we’ll be watching:
Tuesday Fed chair Jerome Powell testifies before the Senate’s banking committee. UK and Australia publish retail sales data.
Wednesday US and China release inflation data. US auctions 10-year government bonds, with yields rising rapidly. Earnings from Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, Lennar, and Aeon.
Thursday Private equity giant TPG and human resources software maker Justworks start trading following their initial public offerings (IPOs). US auctions 30-year government bonds. Earnings from Uniqlo-owner Fast Retailing, Seven & i, and Delta Air Lines.
Friday China releases data on imports and exports. US publishes retail sales numbers from the key holiday period. Earnings from JPMorgan, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and BlackRock.
